bG Gallery presents, Time to Make the Donuts, a solo exhibition by artist Carol Powell.

The series, titled after the 1980s cult-classic Dunkin Donuts ad campaign, parodies nostalgic advertising from the 1950s-1980s replacing the products advertised with donuts. The exhibition itself consists of a baker's dozen of intricately hand-threaded embroideries accompanied by drawings and plush sculptures. A touch of punk ethos is sprinkled into the works as many of their titles reference punk songs and the donut motif itself results from a vision inspired by the punk band, Alice Donut.
Carol Powell has been experimenting with embroidery, textile, and fabric art for over 20 years and was a forerunner of the recent explosion of embroidery in pop culture. Her work is an exploration of uncontrollable circumstances.

Her mixed media work is all-at-once humorous, tragic and autobiographical. Powell mixes dry irony about her life conditions (including her struggle with diabetes) and social observation with nostalgic story-book style imagery.
